As part of its commitment to help reduce doorstep crime, Police in Pembrokeshire are urging vigilance in relation to cold callers. Police are offering advice which it's hoped will help decrease the number of rogue traders, bogus callers and subsequent distraction burglary victims across Pembrokeshire, and to increase the reporting of suspicious doorstep incidents. The message to the public is simple –‘If in doubt, keep them out’. It sounds simple, but if you don't let someone in - they will go away. Don't let them pressure you into opening the door. Be prepared. Be in control. Think about what to say to doorstep cold callers in advance. And keep a list of key contact numbers near your phone so you can check out legitimate callers. Ask all other unwanted callers to go away. Call a neighbour or the police. Contact a local relative or nominated neighbour who can help verify a cold caller. If you think someone is a rogue trader call us on 101. To report a distraction burglar, rogue trader or bogus caller who has taken your money and is still in the area - call 999. Do not give any personal information or bank details under any circumstances to strangers.
Sergeant Martin Vaughan said: “This advice is important as it raises awareness of the dangers of doorstep fraudsters, and offers clear advice on how to react if a doorstep caller knocks at the front door, or indeed telephones. You should always be on your guard, as the person stood on your doorstep could be a legitimate caller, or they might be a rogue trader, or even a distraction burglar. Our advice is simple – if in doubt keep them out!”
If you need to report any suspicious activity or incident, please call Dyfed-Powys Police on 101.
